Calverton Miners’ Welfare Forced To Close After Car Crashes Into Building

2 min read

Photos show the scale of damage caused after a car crashed into a Nottinghamshire miners’ welfare. A car appears to have veered over a parcel of grass before colliding with a wall at the back of Calverton Miners’ Welfare as well as a car parked outside.

Significant damage has been caused to the front of the car as well as to part of the brickwork of the welfare’s building. The Calverton Miners’ Welfare has confirmed that it could be closed for days following the incident on Saturday (December 28).

The club, also known as Top Club, first posted in the early hours of Sunday morning to say that the venue would be closed throughout Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. The club initially said: “Due to unforeseen circumstances, the club will be closed for a few days Sunday, Monday and Tuesday while we establish a few things.

“We will keep you informed.” The club then posted an update at around 11am on Sunday, saying the site remained closed for “safety reasons”.

Dean Wilson, the chair of trustees at the club, said in a statement: “Following the car accident at the welfare last night, on the advice of the fire and rescue service, the welfare is closed for safety. It will reopen as soon as we are able.

“We will update you as soon as we can.” Opening hours show that the club would usually open between 10am and 7pm on a Sunday.

Although usually closed on a Monday, the club normally reopens between 6pm and 8pm on a Tuesday. The site, based on Hollinwood Lane, is situated across the road from a monument featuring part of Calverton Colliery’s pit wheel.

A Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue spokesperson said that crews from the Calverton, Arnold and Highfields fire stations attended the incident, arriving at 10.50pm on Saturday and leaving just after midnight.

The extent of any potential injuries remains unclear at this time.
